Oman arrests nearly 900 in a week for labour law violation

Muscat: A total of 880 expats were arrested for violating the country's Labour Law, and a further 410 were deported in one week, Oman's Ministry of Manpower has revealed.

The Ministry released its weekly indicators of expatriate workers who were arrested through a joint operation with other government authorities. The workers were arrested between March 10 and 16, 2019. Of the total violators, 303 left their jobs, 410 were freelancing, and 166 carried no documents. 619 of the workers were engaged in commercial sales work, 85 worked in agriculture, and 176 were domestic workers.

Muscat, the capital, recorded the highest number of arrests with 626 followed by Northern Al Batinah with 78 during the same week. The ministry also deported 423 workers "as a result of violating the provisions of the Labour Law."

The authorities at the Ministry of Manpower are currently taking the appropriate legal action against the workers.
