India to host upcoming U-17 Women's Soccer World Cup

Muscat: India has been chosen to host the upcoming U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2020, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced.

“We are delighted to announce that India has been confirmed as the host of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2020,” Infantino said after a high level planning meet in Miami, USA.

All India Football Federation General Secretary Kaushal Das confirmed the announcement and said: “We are thankful to FIFA for giving us the opportunity to host the U-17 Women’s World Cup. This decision will certainly raise the profile of women’s football in India.”

As host country, India’s national U-17 team automatically qualifies it to participate in the tournament. Till date, the cup has largely remained in Asia with North Korea having it twice and South Korea and Japan having won it once. France and Spain are the only two non-Asian countries to have won the cup.

The bidding process for this tournament began in 2018 and France had expressed interest to host the event as well.
