Orpic’s Sohar refinery project achieves 40m LTI-free hours

Muscat: Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company’s (Orpic) Sohar Refinery Improvement Project (SRIP) has achieved more than 40 million man hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI) with more than 14,000 people working on site.
This achievement reiterates Orpic’s commitment to placing safety and the environment first — safety of its people, plant, operations and the community.
This milestone also highlights an important aspect — the individual effort made by every person, department and function to attain this goal. Each department has played its role and contributed effectively in engaging the relevant stakeholders against a most challenging and stringent completion schedule. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016.
To appreciate and encourage the various teams (HSE, Administration, Security, Project teams), a celebration was conducted at the SRIP project site. Musab Al Mahruqi, chief executive officer of Orpic graced the occasion in the presence of R. P. Singh, general manager – SRIP; Ralph Clim, general manager– SRIP Commissioning; Kamil Al Shanfari, general manager– SR Operations; Tariq Mirza, general manager– Maintenance; Manoel Fernandes, general manager– HSE; Wim Berendsen, PMC project director along with other senior officials of Orpic.
Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor was represented by Marwan Chedid, Group COO, Petrofac; Young-cook Kang, chief executive officer of Daelim; Heonjae Yim, senior vice president of Daelimand among senior officials. This celebration echoes Orpic’s commitment to further spread awareness on the importance of safety especially among its contractors and partners.
Safety is our number one priority. We have a diligent and experienced team who is committed to ensure that the construction and future operation of this project is achieved to its highest standards without anyone getting hurt. I am happy to note that the importance of safety is embedded in our contractor organisations as well. We believe that tomorrow is our reward for working safely today,” Musab said in his address.
“We all need to remember that as we are heading to the last phase of our commissioning, we need to ensure that we do not compromise on quality and keep watchful eyes on utmost safety of our people and our plants,” he added.
The Sohar Refinery Improvement Project is a multibillion-dollar capital investment for Orpic, which is being delivered in response to the need to upgrade Orpic’s refining capability in order to further maximise the value of Omani crude oil, and to ensure that the Sultanate’s increasing demand for fuel is met.
In addition to this, the immediate commercial benefits that SRIP brings to the business are that, it will have a socio-economic impact in other areas. Enhancing In-Country Value is an integral part of our growth strategy, and substantial benefits to the small and medium enterprises in the country are anticipated. More than 300 direct, permanent jobs have been created, and around 2,400 Omani contract roles have been offered over the project lifetime.
