ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifier: Wasim Ali leads Oman to huge win over Thailand

Muscat: Captain Wasim Ali came up with a fine all-round display to lead Oman to a massive 142-run victory over Thailand in their opening match of the ICC U-19 World Cup Asia Qualifier Division 2 competition in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
According to information received here, Oman, asked to bat first in their Group B match, piled up 235 runs before being bowled out in 49.4 overs. Wasim Ali then claimed five wickets with his left-arm orthodox bowling as Oman bowled out their opponents 93 in 32.2 overs.
Opening batsmen Praythyosh Sivakumar (52) and Ivan Joseph Manjila (25) gave a solid start to Oman innings scoring 45 runs for the first wicket. Vice-captain Paritosh Hitesh then joined Praythyosh and tried to further rise the scoring tempo. His 20-run knock included a six.
After Paritosh’s departure, captain Wasim gave a good company for Praythyosh scoring a 34-ball 29 with a six and a four.
However, it was Indunil Udara Palihawadana who propelled Oman towards a big total with some lusty hitting at the end.
He eventually emerged Oman’s highest scorer after smashing five sixes and four fours in his 36-ball 64.
For Thailand, Kiatiwut Suttisan claimed four wickets while Panasak Daenmaliode bagged three scalps.
In reply, Thailand lost their opening batsman Sakchai Prakae, who was run out in the third over. After that Wasim Ali and his teammates tightened the screws with excellent bowling.
The Thais folded up in 32.2 overs. While Wasim Ali claimed five wickets, his deputy Paritosh, Moshin Qureshi and Mohammed Salman bagged a wicket apiece.
‘Great start’
Team manager Dad Mohammed Al Balushi hailed Oman players for a ‘great start’ and termed the victory as a morale booster for the entire squad.
“It’s definitely a great start by the our boys. Today they showed what they are capable of. It was pleasing to see them perform as a unit and the way their approached the game today.”
“This victory will boost their morale and we are expecting them to do even better in the coming matches,” Dad Mohammed added.
With only two teams qualifying for the next stage from this Qualifier, Oman will be looking to perform consistently throughout the tournament. After a day’s rest, the Sultanate squad will take on Kuwait in their next match of the five-team group on Thursday.
