Imran Khan supporters call for him to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Muscat: Online supporters of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan have begun calling for the Nobel Peace Prize to be given to him, after his efforts in releasing an Indian pilot who was captured within Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.

One user said, "He had started bringing peace from Khyber Pakhtunwa to Pakistan and now working towards bringing peace in the region!"

Another user thought the prize was warranted for "the man who is making history as we speak."

Meanwhile, a user has started a petition on Change.org demanding a prize for the Pakistani leader, and the petition has already been signed nearly 300,000 times. According to the petition, it is "for his [Imran Khan's] peace efforts and dialogues in the Asian region."

According to the Nobel Foundation, "a nomination is considered valid if it is submitted by a person who falls within one of the following categories: Members of national assemblies and national governments (cabinet members/ministers), of sovereign states as well as current heads of states, members of The International Court of Justice in The Hague and The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, members of l’Institut de Droit International, members of the Executive Committee of the international board of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, university professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes, persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, members of the main board of directors or its equivalent of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee."

Furthermore, "The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for the selection of eligible candidates and the choice of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. The Committee is composed of five members appointed by the Storting (Norwegian parliament)," according to the foundation.
