Tourism Tax off eateries’ menu in Oman

Muscat: Restaurants in Oman have stopped collecting tourism tax after a decision by the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) came into effect on Thursday.
MoT had announced on Wednesday that non-tourism restaurants will not be permitted to collect the 4 per cent tourism tax.
Any restaurant or eatery, not located within a hotel in Oman, is now barred from charging the tax, according to the ministry. A restaurant employee confirmed that they are no longer charging tourism taxes and said customers will be jubilant as a result.
“I believe the customers will be happy about it; the food will be cheaper; and it’s better for the restaurant,” said the employee on condition of anonymity.
The move would also facilitate the establishment of new restaurants; owners previously needed to obtain permits from the MoT in addition to other government entities.
Recently, Abdullah Al Hajri, deputy general director of Administrative Affairs at MoT, said the ministry is coordinating with Public Authority for Consumer Protection to monitor the market.
Al Hajri also warned fast food joints and restaurants against charging customers 4 per cent for tourism. Those who don’t comply with the new rule will face legal consequences.
