Muscat: Sheikh Salim Al Wahaibi has been elected unopposed as the new Oman Football Association (OFA) chairman, sources at OFA informed Times of Oman on Sunday.
“The last day for filing of nominations for the chairmanship was today and no other candidates turned-up. Therefore, Sheikh Salim was elected unopposed,” said the source.
Last week, speaking to the media, Al Wahaibi had said that his main objective was to raise the profile of the national team. “Over the past few years, the national team has not been doing that well. Their performance has slipped considerably. I want to see the team get back in top league and compete well at the GCC and Asian levels,” he added.
Former OFA chairman Sayyid Khalid Al Busaidi congratulated Al Wahaibi. "I would like to congratulate Sheikh Salim Al Wahaibi on his new role as OFA Chairman and wish him all success," Sayyid Khalid tweeted on Sunday.
Meanwhile, elections will be held for the post of Vice-President and other members. "We have recieved 4 nominations for the post of vice-president and 25 nominations for the OFA board," added the source.
