Olympics: Oman’s Barakat Al Harthi, Mazoon Al Alawi fail to advance in Rio

Rio de Janeiro: Oman’s sprinters Barakat Al Harthi and Mazoon Al Alawi failed to advance in the men’s and women’s 100m competitions respectively at the Olympic Games on Saturday.
In the men’s 100m Round 1 heats, Barakat was expected to do well but the Omani star sprinter despite a spirited run failed to match his personal best of 10.06 seconds achieved in June this year and finished third in the Heat 6 in a time of 10.22 seconds.
But that was not enough to see the Omani qualify for the semifinals from a heat that was easly won by Jamaica’s Yohan Blake in 10.11 seconds ahead of Turkey’s Jak Ali Harvey, who clocked 10.14.
Earlier in the day, Mazoon Al Alawi failed to better the time she recorded in Friday’s qualifying heats and finished last in the Round 1 Heat 7.
The 18-year-old Omani girl, who clocked 12.30 seconds on Friday to finish third in her qualifying heat and book a place in the first round heats, clocked 12.43 seconds on Saturday to finish last in the eight-strong heat.
The heat was won by Jamaican Elaine Thompson in a time of 11.21 seconds with Brazilian Rosagela Santos finishing second in 11.25 seconds.
With Barakat and Mazoon as well as woman shooter Wadha Al Balushi bowing out of their respective competitions, now Oman’s only athlete still in contention is marksman Hamed Al Khatri.
Al Khatri will be seen in action on Sunday when he begins his campaign in the first round of 50m Rifle 3 Position Men’s Qualifications.
Wadha Al Balushi took part in the 10m Air Pistol competition where she finished in 26th place in the qualification round last Sunday.
