Muscat: Sohar and Suwaiq recorded a record temperature of 48 degree Celsius on Sunday, the highest in Oman this summer, brought on by heavy winds, the Oman Meteorology Department tweeted on its official Twitter handle.

“It might be the hottest day in Oman this summer. I felt like I was in an oven,” stated Riju Varghese, who works in a petrol station in Sohar.
In its 24-hour outlook, the Meteorology Department forecast clear to partly cloudy skies along the coastal areas of Dhofar Governorate and mainly clear skies over the rest of the Sultanate, with a chance of convective clouds developing over Al Hajar Mountains in the afternoon, with isolated rain showers.
“Also, there is a chance of blowing wind raising dust over the deserts and open areas of Al Wusta and South Al Sharqiya governorates,” it said.
According to the department’s website, Muscat witnessed a temperature of 44 degree Celsius on Sunday.
Meanwhile, BBC Weather reported the temperature was actually 48 degree Celsius.
People in Muscat complained on social networking sites that the temperature was higher than that reported.
Many even posted the temperature readings recorded on their vehicles on social media.
According to the meteorology department’s forecast, Sur and Rustaq will face a high temperature of 46 degree Celsius on Monday.
The department predicted Muscat may see a temperature of 43 degree Celsius, and Salalah’s forecast temperature of 32 degree Celsius is the lowest in the Sultanate.
