Oman's National Ferries Company registers big rise in cargo shipping

Muscat: Ferry trips registered a rise in passengers to 51,824 during the first quarter of 2016, an increase of 15.23 per cent, compared with 42,083 passengers in the same period of 2015, according to statistics released by the National Ferries Company (NFC).
The statistics indicated an increase in the total number of vehicle shipped on board of the ferries during the first quarter of this year to 12,383 vehicles, an increase of 27.17 per cent, compared to 10,559 vehicles in the same period last year.
The statistics also showed a 512.5 per cent rise in the volume of cargo traffic to 7,130 tonnes by the end of the first quarter of the current year, compared to 1,164 tonnes in the same period of 2015.
The statistical bulletin showed that Shanna-Masirah route recorded the highest proportion in passenger traffic during the first quarter of this year, as the number of passengers reached on this route 38,739 passengers, with an occupancy rate of 45 percent.
As many as 11,086 vehicles were shipped on board of this route, with 54 per cent occupancy rate, followed by Lima-Diba route, which recorded 5.056 passengers with 74 per cent occupancy rate. Passenger occupancy rate on Khasab-Shinas route reached 43 per cent. The route transported 2,594 passengers.
The route also transported 653 vehicles, with an occupancy rate of 54 per cent, followed by Muscat-Khasab route, which transported 1,726 passengers, with 63 per cent occupancy rate.
The route transported 442 vehicles, and 79 per cent occupancy rate. Shinas-Diba route transported 1,710 passengers and 173 vehicles. The total number of passengers transported by Khasab-Lima, Lima-Shinas and Khasab –Diba were 1797.
Khasab- Bandar Abbas route transported 202 passengers of the Iranian delegation participated in the Omani-Iranian Exhibition held in the Wilayat of Khasab.
