Poisonous potatoes seized in Oman

Al Buriami: Specialists at Al Buraimi Municipality inspected the vegetable, fruits and foodstuff sale outlets at the wilaya and dumped 200 kgs of poisonous potatoes after receiving the ministerial circular about the fresh potatoes which include solanine a glycoalkaloid found mainly in nightshade family species like potato and tomato.
It occurs naturally in the plant, its leaves and fruits. Solanine consumption primarily causes gastrointestinal and neurological disorders.
The Directorate General of Regional Municipality and Water Resources in the Governorate of Al Buraimi called upon citizens and expatriates to be cautious while buying fresh potatoes.
