Muscat: A total of 474 expat workers were arrested in Oman last week, the Ministry of Manpower announced on Wednesday.
The expats, officials said, were arrested for violating labour laws. According to the ministry, 354 commercial workers, 62 agricultural workers and 58 housemaids were among those arrested.
"An inspection team from the Ministry of Manpower managed to arrest 474 workers in violation of the labour law and regulations between January 27 and February 2," the Ministry said.
“After an investigation [it was found that] 252 of them were absconding workers, 190 were laid-off workers and 29 were referred by other authorities,” the ministry added.
Muscat Governorate recorded the highest number of violations with 249 cases, followed by Batinah with 66 cases.
Meanwhile, 375 illegal expats were deported during this period for violating the Residence and other ministerial Laws.
