HM sends condolences to President Putin after Aeroflot tragedy

Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said has sent his condolences to President Vladimir Putin of Russia after a plane in Moscow burst into flames at Shermetyevo International Airport on Sunday, killing over 40 passengers.

According to Russia's Aeroflot Airlines, the crew of flight SU1492 attempted to save the passengers.

The airline said in a statement, “Aeroflot sends condolences to the families and friends of those killed and injured in the crash of flight SU1492 Moscow - Murmansk. The crew of the aircraft did everything to rescue passengers and provide urgent assistance to the victims. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save everyone.”

In a separate statement, the company said, “Insurers will pay insurance compensation to relatives of the victims and injured, in the wake of the tragedy.”

A statement issued by Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport read: “Sheremetyevo International Airport together and Aeroflot with deep regret confirm the information about the death of passengers of flight SU1492 as a result of an accident with the aircraft on May 5, at Sheremetyevo Airport.

“Aeroflot and Sheremetyevo will provide all-round assistance to the relatives and friends of the dead and injured,” the statement added.

The Russian-made 'Sukhoi Superjet' was carrying 78 people as it careened across the runway at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport with thick, black smoke pouring out from behind after it made an emergency landing in Moscow.
