Muscat: Impromptu street parties have broken out all across Oman, as Omanis celebrate with their Qatari brothers in the wake of their first ever Asian Cup success.
Qatar beat Japan 3-1 in the final of the 2019 Asian Cup in Abu Dhabi, and Omanis say that the two cultures are really close to each other.
“We are happy for Qatar because we are the same country,” said one Omani, who was celebrating with his friend in Al Hail. “It was a good match, yes, it was very stressful. It was hard for Qatar to win.”
Another young local lad added, “We like Qatar, we are so close to Qatar, so we are celebrating for their win. It is not about beating Japan, but it is about happiness for all."
“For example, when we won the Gulf Cup, they celebrated with us, so they win, we win, it is the same thing,” added his friend.
Several young Omanis have gotten into their cars and are happily honking on the streets, as they wave the Sultanate’s flags to celebrate Qatar’s historic win.
