Khalid Al Mawali re-elected as Majlis Al Shura chairman

Muscat: In response to the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Majlis Al Shura today held its extraordinary session to take oath and elect the chairman and two deputies of the chairman in accordance with the provision of article 58 (bis 12) of the Basic Law of the State.

In accordance with the provision of Royal Decree No. 99/2011, which states that the session will be chaired by the most senior member, the session was chaired by Salim bin Sa'ed bin Hamdoon Al Malki, Representative of the Wilayat of Barka.

The members of the Majlis Al Shura reelected Khalid bin Hilal Al Mawali, representative of Wadi Al Maawil as chairman of the Majlis Al Shura 8th Term with absolute majority (59 votes) out of 85 votes at the first round).

Rashid bin Ahmed Al Shamsi and Mohammed bin Abu Bhacker Al Ghassani were elected as deputy chairmen.



The new members started the extraordinary session by taking oath to become loyal to His Majesty the Sultan and the country and respect the Basic Law of the State, as well as the laws in-force, to maintain the integrity of the state and the basic pillars of the Omani society, its true value and to carry out their duties whether at the Majlis Al Shura or at its committees or its Secretariat General sincerely.

Five members nominated themselves for the chairman position namely Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Yahya Al Hadabi, representative of the Wilayat of Bidbid, Khalid bin Hilal bin Nasser Al Mawali, representative of Wadi Al Maawil, Dr. Saleh bin Said bin Salim Masan, representative of the Wilayat of Thumrait, Mohammed bin Salim bin Khalifa Al Busaidi, representative of the Wilayat of Baushar and Mohammed bin Sulaiman bin Hamoud Al Kindi, Representative of the Wilayat of Nakhal.



The five candidates then introduced themselves to the rest of the members and highlighted their qualifications and practical experience. Each candidates was given three minutes only to present himself.

Sheikh Ali bin Nasser Al Mahrouqi, Secretary General of the Majlis A'Shura said that the election of the Chairman of Majlis Al Shura for the current term went on as planned and that all members have joined hands to ensure its success.

He said in a statement to ONA that the election of the two deputies of the chairman was through individual election and through the absolute majority. He affirmed that having new 60 members at the Majlis Al Shura will have a positive reflection on the Shura process in the Sultanate.

He added: "We are looking forward that the new members will follow a methodology that reflects our true values and culture, convey the right message and practice the legislative and oversight work properly".

He pointed out the activities of Majlis Al Shura, its committees, the orientation week and the courses for the members will be after convening the Council of Oman.
