Two labour recruitment office owners fined in Oman

Muscat: Two owners of labour recruitment offices in Sohar have been fined over OMR2,000, iand one of them has been banned from providing any future services, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) has announced.
The preliminary court in Sohar issued two judicial rulings condemning the owners of labour recruitment offices for failing to refund consumers after their workers refused to work.
The details of the first case involve a consumer who contacted a labour office to hire a worker for an amount of OMR1,150.
After the worker was sent to the consumer, during the service guarantee period, she refused to work. The consumer then returned to the office and informed them about what happened. The two parties agreed to a refund of OMR700. But when the office did not comply, the consumer approached PACP in Sohar and filed a complaint. The case was referred to the Public Prosecution.
The court decided to convict the owner of the office for non-compliance of service, which led to a fine of OMR500 in addition to ending all recruitment activity for the office indefinitely. The court also ordered that the summary of the judgement be published in two daily newspapers at the expense of the convicted.
The second case bears striking similarities with the first. In this case, the consumer agreed to pay an amount of OMR 1,200 to hire a worker, however the worker refused to work. The consumer then filed a complaint and the case was referred to the judicial authorities. The court decided to convict the defendant for non-compliance of work despite providing a service guarantee. The owner was ordered to pay OMR400 and forced to refund the full amount of OMR 1,200 to the consumer.
