Muscat: Women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have begun receiving divorce notifications by text message, the nation's Ministry of Justice confirmed on Sunday.
"Saudi courts have started to send such notifications starting on January 6, 2018, a step aimed at protecting the rights of female clients, and enhancing digital transformation with more services," said the ministry.
“The courts notify women of probate certificates related to marital status -- upon approval -- through their Absher-registered mobile numbers,” the ministry explained. “The message includes the certificate number and the name of the relevant court.”
Through the ministry's Najiz portal (https://najiz.moj.gov.sa), women can also inquire about their marital status and view the details of any probate certificates.
Female clients can also visit the court or the court president’s office in order to obtain a copy of the divorce certificate, if any.
The moves are aimed at ending cases of men divorcing women without telling them.
