Muscat: Salalah Port has launched a solar energy project which produces 30 kW of energy.

Still in its experimental phase, the amount of energy generated by solar cells during the winter season so far was 6,148 kWh.

The port authority said in a statement: "Salalah Port has launched a pilot project for eco-friendly solar-energy. The solar cells have been installed in parking spaces where the project is expected to contribute to the preservation of the environment and the regulation of electricity expenditure in the port.

"The solar cells are connected directly to the electricity grid. All the lighting of the management building is powered by solar energy. The project is expected to achieve and reduce the energy expenditure in the port because the cells generate 30 kW of energy."
