Khoula Hospital performs first arthroscopic hip joint surgery

Muscat: Khoula Hospital performed its first arthroscopic hip joint surgery.
The successful operation was also the first performed by any Ministry of Health institution.
Dr. Suweilam Al Ghanami, Joint Surgery and Sports Injuries Consultant at Khoula Hospital stated that "this procedure has been performed for a patient (that) has a sports injury in the hip joint. All non-operative measures had been taken for the patient but was not enough to heal him."
Dr. Al Ghanami added that a specialised team at the hospital was trained to handle such procedures.
"Due to the development of laparoscopic techniques worldwide, the operation, which lasted four hours, was successful and the patient left the hospital the day after the operation," he added.
Arthroscopic hip surgeries are considered to be technically difficult and were previously performed via surgical operation. However, advancements in technology have led to less invasive methods, with such operations performed with minimal side effects.
