Omani population to reach 4 million by 2040

Muscat: Population of Omanis will reach 4 million by 2040, according to a study conducted by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) regarding population projection (2015-2040).

The study also stated that the population will increase by 2.4 million by 2040 with Omani males making up 69 percent compared to 72 percent by females considering average fertility; average age is expected to be 27.

The study also expects the population of Omanis in working age (15-64) will reach 64 percent considering high fertility which will increase to 69 percent at low fertility conditions.

It is also expected that women reaching the childbearing age will increase by 45 percent by 2040, considering average fertility.

The study suggests that the rate of dependency will reach to 56 dependants for each 100 individual in the working age in 2040 considering high fertility rates as opposed to 45 dependants due to low fertility rates.

According to Governorate population indicators, the highest increase of population during the next 25 years will be in Muscat Governorate with an expected increase of 322,000 people, considering the continuity of releasing expatriates.

The least Governorate with increasing population, which is expected to be achieved during the first half of 2040 is Musandam Governorate with 17,000 people only.
