Expatriates in Oman can now import only one used vehicle

Muscat: Expatriates living in Oman can import only one used vehicle while citizens can import unlimited number of used private cars, bus, truck and motorbikes in a year, according to a ministerial decision.

In a Ministerial Decision Number 203/2015, Dr Ali bin Masaud bin Ali Al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry said that the expatriates are allowed to import the vehicle if he is above 18 years old. “Non Omanis should import their vehicles by using his/her civil number,” said Awadh bin Said Al Alawi, Director of Commercial Affairs Department.

The decision takes effect 90 days following its publication in the official gazette.

The official, however, added that there is no bar on the companies who are selling used vehicles.

Other trading, industrial and service establishments may also import used trucks and equipment for their own usage, provided that the number and type of used trucks and equipment conforms to the activity of such establishments and their actual needs.

Import of used motorbikes with engine capacity of less than seventy cubic centimeters, would require a permit from the Ministry.

Import of private vehicles exceeding seven years from the date of manufacturing and buses exceeding ten years and equipment exceeding fifteen years is however prohibited.

Import of classic cars exceeding thirty years from date of manufacture is allowed. Imported vehicles shall also conform to the specifications applicable in Oman.
