5 ways you can reduce the risk of dengue

Muscat: Oman's Ministry of Health has issued guidelines for citizens and residents to avoid dengue.
According to the advisory, people can limit the risk of dengue — spread by the aedes aegypti mosquito — by following these tips:
1. Empty water containers, and animal and bird drinking bowls and clean them with a brush every five days.
2. Get rid of collected water from air conditioning units with regular changing of water in water coolers and other areas of water collection.
3. Changing of water in swimming pools, fountains, and potted plants every five days.
4. Proper coverage of water tanks.
5. Get rid of old tires, empty paint containers, and spoiled house utensils.
Three Omanis and one expat were found to have contracted the disease in the wilayat of Seeb.

Symptoms of dengue include sudden, high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, severe joint and muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, and mild bleeding from the gums and nose. Symptoms begin four to six days after infection and last for up to 10 days.
