Oman working on creating 500,000 jobs in tourism sector and 300,000 in logistics sector

Muscat: A total of 500,000 jobs in the tourism sector and 300,000 in the logistics sector jobs could be available by 2040, officials at the National Programme for Enhancing Economic Diversification (Tanfeedh) have said at a press conference.

Mohammed Al Zadjali head of investment services at the Ministry of Tourism said that the Ministry is planning on increasing the number of jobs in the sector, in addition to increasing the value of investment to OMR19 billion.

Zadjali said, “The goals of the tourism sector include creating 500,000 jobs by 2040, and increasing the value of investment to OMR 19 billion. The ministry also plans to increase the number of international tourist to 2.7 million by 2020”

Meanwhile, Nabil Al Bimani, Group Chief Ports and Free Zones Officer said that currently Oman is ranked 43 in the global logistics sector index but they plan to change that soon.

He said, “We predict that by 2040 the logistics sector could provide job opportunities for 300,000 people,” adding, “Currently Oman is ranked 43rd in the global logistics sector index but by 2040 we expect the sector to be the ranked 10th.”

Talking about the meeting, His Excellency Dr Khamis Al Jabri chairman of the implementation and Follow-up Support Unit (Tanfeedh) said, “Today, we will be presenting you with the outcomes and stages of all the projects, since the launch of Tanfeedh two years ago.”

The meeting was attended by government office representatives who supervise each sector, they shed light on the recent achievements of their sector. Representatives from Asyad, Capital Market Authority, Oman Central Bank, Ministry of Oil and Gas and Ministry of Manpower among others were present at the event.
