SQU launches Best Sports College Award to promote sports

MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) launched the ‘Best Sports College Award’ that will honour distinguished colleges for their achievements in sports field on Wednesday. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Ali bin Saud Al Bimani, Vice Chancellor of SQU and top officials from the university’s administration and the College of Education at SQU.
Dr. Badriya bint Khalfan Al Hadhabi, Head of the Physical Education Department at the College of Education, Chairperson of the award committee said, “The award comes as a new initiative that seeks to involve the largest possible sector of university students, faculty members and staff in a more organised and comprehensive environment than in the past”.
She added that the goals of the award drives from the idea to live a healthy life that contributes to educating the young generation to make them effectively involve in the development journey of the country.
The award's vision is to enhance the role of sport and its importance in improving the lives of individuals, and to raise the culture of competition among members of the university community. The award seeks to raise the level of interest in sport activities and enhance its position among university students and their employees, and encourage them to participate in sports activities.
The award aims to expand the base of participants for sport activities among members of the university family, to support and highlight the efforts of people involved in sport activities in the university, and to highlight outstanding colleges' efforts in supporting sport activities.
The award falls in two categories. The first category is the activities of the Deanship of Students' Affairs, which is the field of programs and activities supervised by the Physical Education Department the Deanship of Student Affairs for the male and female of students (including competitions of different games, participating in the university teams in various games). The second field encompasses the activities of the colleges such sport day, recreational sport activities organised by the colleges.
