Muscat: Dubai aims to be the destination of choice for people in Oman this summer with a variety of events from Ramadan through till Eid Al Adha, said Saeed Mohammed Al Falasi, from the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, at a press conference in Muscat on Monday.

Al Falasi highlighted the many special events, festivities and promotions planned from June until September, which include Ramadan in Dubai (19 June – 17 July), Eid in Dubai – Eid Al Fitr (18 July – 22 July), Modhesh World (9 July –29 August), Dubai Summer Surprises (23 July – 5 September) and Eid in Dubai – Eid Al Adha (24 September– 2 October).

“Hopefully we have something exciting for the families. As you can see, summer in Dubai is quite interesting,” Al Falasi said.

Lot to attract

He said Dubai has a lot to attract Omanis and expats who call Oman home. During Ramadan there will be a range of attractions such as the Holy Quran recitation contest and night markets during, to three days of exciting celebrations during Eid Al Fitr which will include three chances to win 500,000 Dirhams.

“Obviously you can’t shop in Dubai without the chance to win something incredible,” said Al Falasi. After Eid Al Fitr the summer events in Dubai will continue with Dubai Summer Surprises, which will have numerous family-friend events featuring entertainment and edutainment, shopping and leisure activities.

This year Dubai will have its biggest-ever edition of Modhesh World with the theme “Every Step is a New Adventure”. Modhesh World 2015 will be occupying over 34,000 square metres at the Dubai World Trade Center.

Dubai Summer Surprises will include Arabic concerts featuring stars including Hussain Al Jasmi and Kadim Al Sahir, in-mall events and celebrity concerts and appearances, and a range of children’s entertainment with Looney Tunes characters, the Cartoon Network Fiesta (featuring Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls), Power Rangers Live, Gumball, Dora the Explorer and Diego Live and much more.

Another highlight of DSS is the Spa & Leisure Promotions featuring discounts, special deals and packages at a host of leading spas and leisure venues.

Arabian Nights

The summer events will conclude with Eid in Dubai – Eid Al Adha which will feature Arabian Nights, an edutainment puppet theatre show, fireworks and in-mall events.

“This year’s exciting festival and events calendar will give residents and visitors many more great reasons to enjoy Dubai during the summer, firmly positioning the emirate as a year-round family tourism destination,” Al Falasi concluded.

Dubai has always been a popular destination for tourists from Oman, Al Falasi said, and the numbers are increasing year after year. In 2013 there were 290,826 people who travelled from Oman to Dubai for tourism purposes, while in 2014 that number rose to 345,565.

“That’s almost up by 18 percent,” Al Falasi noted, adding he expected the numbers to grow again this year.
