British Ambassador appointed as NATO Senior Civilian Rep. in Afghanistan

Muscat: Sir Nicholas Kay, Britain's ambassador to Afghanistan, has been appointed as NATO's next Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, NATO's Secretary General has announced.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement, "I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Sir Nicholas Kay as NATO's next Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan.
"He will take up his appointment in March 2019. Sir Nicholas knows Afghanistan well, having served for more than a year as the United Kingdom's ambassador in Kabul," Stoltenberg said.
Kay will replace Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann of Germany, who has been in the post since March 2017.
NATO's Senior Civilian Representative represents the political leadership of the alliance in Kabul both officially and politically.
Kay welcomed the appointment, saying, "Thank you. Honoured to be appointed by @jensstoltenberg to lead #NATO political & diplomatic efforts to help Afghans achieve a sustainable peace.
"I start in March. Still lots to do @UKinAfghanistan & to support @NATOscr Amb Zimmerman in coming months."
