COVID-19 recovery rate in Oman crosses 90%

Muscat: More than 90 per cent of people in Oman who have tested positive for COVID-19, have successfully recovered from the disease, a figure that is 30 percent higher than the global recovery rate.
According to statistics released by the Ministry of Health, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country, as of August 8, was 81,357, of which 73,481 have recovered, pointing to a recovery rate of 90.3 per cent.
Globally, figures from Johns Hopkins’ Coronavirus Resource Centre put the number of infections worldwide at 19.4 million, with recoveries standing at about 11.77 million, which means the rate of recovery across the globe is 60.3 per cent.
In Oman, 509 people have died due to infection from the virus, an amount that accounts for only 0.07 per cent of global deaths, which come to 721,906.
The Ministry of Health's epidemiological report for July noted that the peak of the virus in the Governorate of Muscat was in the middle of June, while it peaked in other 10 governorates in July.
“The curve shows that the seven-day moving average of COVID-19 cases in Oman reached its peak in the first week of July 2020 at a rate of 2,000 cases and then began to decline gradually until the average incidence in July reached 1,000 cases at a decrease rate of 500 cases per week,” said the report.
“The peak of cases was in Muscat Governorate in the last half of June, and was then followed by the other governorates which reached their peaks in mid-July,” added the report. “The peak of admissions in hospitals in general and in ICUs in particular was during the third week of July.”
Plans have also been made to monitor the incidence of COVID-19 in the country, should there be a resurgence or spike in the number of cases in the coming weeks and months.
The report said: “To monitor the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Sultanate, the following indicators will be adopted for the event of emerging another wave of the pandemic in the upcoming phases: the number of cases admitted in the hospitals in general and in the ICUs in particular, sentinel sites across the Sultanate, the results of the National Serological Survey of COVID-19, and using the number of daily deaths (per million inhabitants) and comparing to mortality rates in recent years.”
The Ministry of Health added that the latest epidemiological data referred to signs of decrease in the total number of infected cases and those admitted to hospitals and ICUs.
