Tropical depression: NCEM issues statement on disaster preparedness

Muscat: The National Centre for Emergency Management (NCEM) monitors the formation of the tropical depression in the eastern Arabian Sea and its expected effects on the Sultanate.

A statement issued online by NCEM said, "The National Centre for Emergency Management is following up the tropical depression in the eastern Arabian Sea and its expected effects on the Sultanate, in coordination with the specialists in the General Authority of Civil Aviation. Due to the possibility of varying heavy rainfall accompanied by flowing valleys, active high-speed winds and sea waves, the National Centre for Emergency Management and the sub-committees for emergency management have been activated in the governorates that are expected to be covered by the direct effects of the situation. Take the necessary measures to enhance the readiness of the main and support sectors and agencies, and prepare to reduce any impacts."

The statement urged that "in the interest of public safety, the Committee calls on all to obtain information from official sources, follow the instructions issued by them, and take care and caution related to protecting and preserving lives."

The sub-committees for managing emergency cases in the governorates expected to be affected by the tropical state held their meetings and laid down their plans to reduce the effects of the situation, as the search and rescue sector continues to move and distribute search and rescue resources, with full readiness for the relief and sheltering sector in all governorates, the National Centre for Emergency Management (NCEM) announced.

A statement issued online by NCEM said, "A meeting of the sub-committees was convened to manage the emergency cases in the governorates expected to be affected by the weather and prepare for the next case, and to enhance the readiness of the governorates to meet the requirements of search and rescue, medical response, public health, relief, shelter, and the maintenance of basic services."

"The search and rescue sector is mobilising and distributing search and rescue capabilities to the governorates that are expected to be affected by the situation. The shelter and relief sector in all governorates is also ready to deal with the effects of the weather situation on the Sultanate," the statement added.
