Deep tropical depression could bring 100 mm of rain

Muscat: The analysis of the National Multi Hazards Early Warning Centre indicates that the Sultanate may be affected by a tropical condition, which could be classified up from tropical depression to a deep tropical depression.

A statement issued online by the National Committee for Emergency Management (NCEM) said, "A tropical depression near the Indo-Pakistan coast Thursday evening is expected to move towards the Sultanate's coasts. The time scale of impact is from Friday evening until next Sunday evening. The geographical scope of influence is over the governorates of Muscat, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Ad Dakhiliyah, North and South Al Sharqiyah, Al Dhahirah, Buraimi and parts of Al Wusta."

The expected conditions associated with this depression are:
1. Expected rain: (40 - 100) mm.
2. Wind speed: (20-25 knots), (36-45 km / hr).
3. The height of the wave: (3) to (5) metres.
4. Sea tide: The possibility of seawater spreading in some low-lying coastal areas coinciding with the highest tidal level.

The expected effects are:
1. Damages caused by running streams and rising water levels in neighbourhoods and low-lying areas.
2. Damages due to strong winds that may affect non-fixed installations.
3. Damages caused by the rise and worsening of the sea (the extension of seawater to land in some low-lying areas and the possibility of coastal roads being affected).
4. Obstruction of roads and traffic flow.
5. Disturbance to various basic services and facilities.
6. Low horizontal visibility due to the increase in dust caused by strong winds, especially in desert areas.
