Fak Kurbah initiative secures release of nearly 800 from Oman prisons

Muscat: The Fak Kurbah initiative this year helped secure the release of nearly 800 people imprisoned for non-criminal cases. More than 60 lawyers worked on this year's initiative which was its seventh edition.
But all these efforts would have been impossible to accomplish without generous contributions and humanitarian efforts including those of the voluntary teams, ordinary people and legal persons.
Fak Kurbah initiative covered 39 courts, while in the remaining 6 courts there were no cases meeting the required conditions.
The number of people released through this initiative this year was 797, including 84 women.
The total contributions received from all governorates of the Sultanate for the campaign was more than OMR641,000.
Even under the difficult condition due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), community members came forward to help their brothers and sisters who found themselves in custody due to their stressed financial situations.
The generous contributors, through the Fak Kurbah initiative, helped bring a new smile of hope on the faces of the insolvents and made their families happy to see them return home.
Various electronic platforms, especially social media were used to create awareness about the initiative and its goals, and to call for donations into the initiative's bank account.
The initiative has received great support from members of the society, who contributed not only by making financial donations, but through online sharing.
Fak Kurbah has urged the community to contribute, in order to achieve the goals and relieve people's distress.
The volunteers are determined to continue to exert and work for this generous nation under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq Al Said.
