Kuwait’s airport to resume commercial flights on 1 August

Kuwait City: Commercial international flights will once again be allowed to operate out of Kuwait International Airport from 1 August, when it will reopen, following its closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to plans put up by Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Kuwait’s airport will operate at a 30 percent capacity from 1 August, for a period of six months. During this time, no more than 10,000 passengers per day will be allowed to use the airport, while only 100 flights are allowed to take off and land at the airport.

From 1 February, 2021 onwards, the airport will increase operational capacity to 60 percent of its peak, during which time a maximum of 20,000 passengers are allowed to pass through the airport, and 200 flights can take off and land every day. This will continue for another six months.

Kuwait’s airport expects to be fully operational on 1 August, 2021, when it will prepare itself for more than 30,000 passengers and upward of 300 flights per day.
Tareq Al-Mezrem, the Kuwaiti government spokesman, said in a statement that the government has approved a three-stage plan to resume commercial flights to and from Kuwait International Airport. The operation of the first stage will be at a maximum of 30 percent capacity.

On March 13, Kuwait suspended all commercial flights as part of the efforts to curb the rapid rise of coronavirus cases. On June 25, Kuwait decided to start the second phase of restoring normal life. The second phase will begin on June 30 and will last for three weeks.

In the second phase, public and private sectors will resume work at less than 30 percent capacity, in addition to the resumption of operation in shopping malls, financial sector, construction sector, retail shops, parks, and pick-ups from restaurants and cafes.
