Oman ranked fifth safest country worldwide

Muscat: Oman is one of the safest countries in the world, according to a new report published by the global database Numbeo.
The Sultanate is ranked fifth globally in the safety and Crime Reduction Index. The first four countries are Qatar, Taiwan, UAE and Georgia.
Numbeo, the world’s largest internet database, has released its Crime Index by Country 2020 mid-year and ranked Oman as the fifth the safest country in the world, with a safety index score of 79.38 points and a crime index score of 20.62.
"The Numbeo database indicates that the crime prevention index and the degree of safety aims to assess the general level of crime in a particular country or city. If the crime index score is less than 20, which means the crime rates are very low, between the scores of 20 and 40, they are considered low, and between 40 and 60, it is moderate," a statement issued by Oman News Agency (ONA) said.
"When the score is between 60 and 80, the crime-levels considered to be high, any score higher than 80, the crime rates are said to be very high."
Numbeo’s crime index 2020 was based on the levels of safety and crime and ranked a total of 133 countries.
"The crime index score depends on many criteria, such as crimes including murder, theft, robbery and rape. It ranks countries with a scale ranging from zero to 100, zero meaning low crime rates and 100 meaning high crime rates."
"Numbeo has been issuing its annual reports since 2009, based on the crime rate and the crime index of countries which is measured according to its internal laws," the statement added.
