Over 140 people rescued during tropical depression in Dhofar: ROP

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has dealt with more than 145 communications during the tropical depression in wilayat of Dhofar Governorate since it started on 29th May.
Brigadier Mohsen bin Ahmed Al Abri, the police chief of the Dhofar Governorate, said, “The Royal Oman Police has rescued and provided assistance to more than 140 people. The Center for Emergency Management contributed to achieving rapid response and minimizing impacts and losses. Work is being done in coordination with other parties to restore life to normal in the governorate.”
Brigadier Mohsen bin Ahmed Al Abri, the police chief of the Dhofar Governorate, said:” the Emergency Situations Management Center in Dhofar Governorate, which was activated on Friday morning, 5th of May 2020, to follow the tropical situation on Dhofar Governorate, received more than 145 reports that varied between drifting and detaining of people and vehicles, asking for help, crashing the affected roads and the outbreak of fires.”
Al Abri pointed out, ”The Royal Oman Police and the Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) were personnel dealing with these reports and their efforts resulted in saving and providing assistance to more than 140 people. In addition, they aided in removing the vehicles that were subject to drowning, detention and transferring a number of urgent medical cases to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.”
About human loss and material damages, Brigadier Mohsen Al Abri reported, “Two citizens died as a result of taking the risk of crossing the Arzat Valley in Salalah, while the search is still underway for a third citizen who was swept away by the rains waters of Wadi Dhahboun in Thumrait.”
“The tropical situation also recorded one fatal case of an expatriate following the collapse of an old residential building built with unstable materials for expatriate workers of Asian nationality in the central Salalah region, which also injured three others,” he added.
He confirmed, ”Dhofar Governorate Police Command arrested a number of people for risking crossing valleys, putting themselves at risk, and legal measures had been taken against them.”
“Thanks to the citizens and residents for the commitment and to follow the instructions. We also thank all the military, governmental and private parties that dealt with the situation,” he added.
