Oman using nuclear technology to preserve cultural heritage

Muscat: A presentation on Oman’s cultural heritage, its importance and the Sultanate’s role in preserving it using all available technologies, including nuclear and radiological technologies that do not damage artefacts, was made by Dr. Nasser bin Said Al Jahwari, Associate Professor at the Department of Archeology in Sultan Qaboos University.
This came during the second meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency to review and evaluate the performance of the regional technical cooperation project on harnessing nuclear science and technology to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of Asian and Indian Ocean countries, recently held in Bali, Indonesia.
The achievements of the participating countries during the first period of the project and the importance of using radiation techniques in this field were discussed. It also discussed challenges and difficulties in using these technologies in each country, the future work plan of the countries participating in the project and the most important needs and requirements and the help the agency can provide.
