Expat worker detained, deported from Oman

Muscat: An expat worker has been imprisoned for three months for selling non-smoking tobacco and deported from the country.

According to the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP), “The Primary Court in Barka recently issued a court ruling against a person who violated consumer law and sentenced him to conviction for the sale of non-smoking chewing tobacco.”

“Immediately, the violator was caught during a tobacco sale, which is in violation of the Consumer Protection Law promulgated by Royal Decree No. 66/2014 and Resolution No. 256/2015 that prohibits the trading of chewing tobacco. As a result, he was transferred to public prosecution, who began investigating the case and referred it to the competent court. The court issued a ruling of three months’ imprisonment and deportation from the country, for negligence in renewing residency permit and working for a non-employer selling chewing tobacco.”

Yousef bin Ahmed Al Riyami, Assistant Director of the department, said that efforts are continuing to eliminate this problem and appealed to everyone to cooperate to counter such people and to protect children from the spread of this problem, considered an intrusion on society.
