Whoever said workouts can get monotonous or boring probably never considered Zumba. We tried an hour’s session with Fitness Manager and Zumba Instructor, Marissa Pontila, to learn some fun facts, and experience for ourselves the benefits of this lively dance fitness class. Here’s what you should know before you go.

1) Great music – Zumba started off with Latin inspired music. It is based on four rhythms - salsa,

meringue, reggaeton, and cumbia. However, now you can find it interspersed with a lot of hip hop and even Bollywood music. Zumba has become so popular that celebrity singers and composers even make music specially tailored for Zumba.

2) Intense calorie burner – You can burn about 500-800 calories in an hour’s session. It’s a full-body workout, and because it’s so much fun, you can actually keep going. You’ll be dancing to amazing numbers the entire time.

3) Improves heart health – Zumba, like any other exercise, works for your heart and helps maintain a good cardiovascular respiratory system.

4) Improves concentration, coordination, and alertness – Keeping pace with your instructor, getting the right step to every beat, and even remembering the sequence is not as easy as it looks. This fitness class is really fast-paced and needs you to stay on your toes. It does not just work your physical body, but also your mind.

5) Works for people of all ages, body types, and preferences – Apart from the regular classes like Zumba Toning and Zumba Fitness, there’s Zumba Kids for children, Zumba Gold for older people, Aqua Zumba for those who love the water and so many more.

6) It boosts your feel-good hormones – Ask any Zumba enthusiast, and they’ll say it’s the happiest form of workout. It’s de-stressing, you get to meet fun people, and you leave feeling satisfied.
