Oman’s consumer watchdog warns retailers against increasing prices during cyclone Luban

Muscat: The Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) in Dhofar has warned retailers against manipulating prices, authorities from the body have said.

In lieu of cyclone Luban, authorities have also asked retailers and “institutions at markets” to stock up on goods.

In a statement, Ali al Basrawi, Director of the Public Authority of Consumer Protection in Dhofar said, "Retailers and institutions at markets were advised to be well stocked and to avoid manipulating prices. Those that [go against this] will face legal reprecussions. PACP will be closely watching to make sure that no infractions occur."

PACP has also intensified inspections. Taai al Junaibi, Assistant Director in al Wusta, added, "We have intensified inspections to make absolutely certain that markets are well stocked. Employees will be present to avoid infractions by retailers."

A statement by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection said, "The directories in Dhofar and al Wusta have finished preparing for cyclone Luban by forming teams of inspectors to monitor markets 24/7 during the event. Suppliers in Muscat were instructed to send large quantities of goods to the two governorates to make sure that essential foods are covered."
