Royal Opera House Muscat to present Chick Corea show

Muscat: American jazz and fusion pianist, keyboardist, and composer, Chick Corea will perform in Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) this weekend.
With sixty-three Grammy nominations and 22 wins through five decades of stellar performance, Chick Corea has attained the status of a living legend.
Many of Corea’s compositions such as Spain, 500 Miles High, La Fiesta and Windows are considered jazz standards. As a member of Miles Davis’s band in the late 1960s, Chick Corea participated in the birth of the ‘electric’ jazz fusion movement. Along with other jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea has been hailed as one of the major American jazz piano artists to emerge in the post John Coltrane era.
By the early 1970s, Corea’s style had emerged out of avant-garde into a crossover jazz fusion style that incorporated Latin jazz. As manifested in the album Return to Forever, at that time, Chick relied on both acoustic and electronic instrumentation and drew more heavily on Latin American styles than on rock music. Later on in his career, this amazingly versatile musician became interested in contemporary classical music and composed his first piano concerto, an adaptation of his signature piece, Spain, which he performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999.
At the Royal Opera House Muscat, in this exciting programme with the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra led by the exciting Romanian-Austrian conductor, Ion Marin, Chick Corea will demonstrate his remarkable talent playing classics including Gershwin’s Cuban Overture as well a selection of Gershwin’s solo piano pieces including his famous Rhapsody in Blue.
Corea will also present one of his own compositions, a brilliant original work titled, Piano Concerto No 1.
Chick Corea will perform on two evenings — Thursday December 12 and on Friday December 13 at 7:00pm.
