FIA to launch karting championship in February

Muscat: The International Automobile Federation (FIA), represented by its member states in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena), will inaugurate the Mena Karting Championship, which kicks off for the first time in the Sultanate on February 10-12, 2020 with a wide international participation of karting stars.
The Championship aims to provide an opportunity for emerging talents in the field of motorsports and to develop this sport in
the region.
This competition, which is considered the most prominent in the karting races in the region, is designed to create an ideal environment for competitors in all countries and giving them the required expertise and raise the technical levels of the competitors.
Mohamed bin Sulayem, FIA Vice President for the Mena, spoke about the launch of the Championship, saying, “Karting is the first stage in the development of motorsport, where the racer learns all the basic skills of the sport as well as the guidelines and rules followed in such races. It is certain that the development of the racer in this sport will qualify him to participate in other races dedicated for higher categories.”
Brigadier Jamal Al Taie, Vice President of Oman Automobile Association, said: “We thank the International Federation for its support and confidence in the Sultanate and for organising events and races that serve motorsport at all technical and administrative levels. This will certainly open the way for young people to engage in this sport as the International Federation seeks to expand the base of participants to
include all age groups.”
“It will open the field for experienced contestants as well as junior contestants. Candidates will be nominated through representatives of the federations and member committees to be present in the Championship in Muscat. All contestants will be given two days for training and adaptation as well as two more days for qualifying rounds and final competitions. After the final competitions, the winners will be awarded in the presence of officials from FIA and national federations,” he added.
On the sidelines of the Championship in Muscat, the FIA Conference will be held in the presence of the FIA President Mr Jean Todt, and the Vice-President for the Mena Region, HE Mohammed bin Sulayem and the rest of the FIA Board of Directors. This conference is held every year. During the conference, many topics and issues related to the development of motorsports will be discussed, in addition to talking about the calendar of international championships and competitions and the mechanism of its development.
