Heavy rains lash Oman, many rescued from overflowing wadis

Heavy rains and thunderstorms lashed Muscat on Wednesday evening leading to waterlogging and gridlock in the city. Rains were also reported from Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, and North Al Batinah, South Batinah and Dakhiliyah.

Many traffic signals in Muscat have been disrupted due to heavy rainfall. Motorists have been advised to take precaution while crossing intersections.
According to Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA), a person was stuck in his vehicle in Amerat valley but emergency personnel were on the spot to rescue him.
Muttrah Souq was flooded due to heavy rains as a result several shopkeepers downed their shutters to minimise their losses.

The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) and police personnel have been placed near wadis to attend to any emergency calls.
“A family was stuck after their vehicle drifted in Al Kabrah valley in Liwa but they were rescued by the police and citizens. They are in good health,” PACDA added.

“Rescue teams in Al Dhahirah governorate are dealing with another case of persons trapped inside a vehicle in the Yanqul wadi,” added PACDA. The Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) said that rainfall received in Dhank was (49.6 mm), Port Sultan Qaboos (30 mm), Rustaq (29.2 mm), Buraimi (17 mm), Saham (16.6 mm), Bausher (13.6 mm) and Khasab (12.2 mm) and Amerat (11.2mm).
“Heavy rains are expected over Musandam, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Al Buraimi, Al Dakhliyah, Al Dahirah and Muscat governorates, accompanied with fresh winds, hail, flash floods (wadis) and low horizontal visibility. Sea state will be moderate to rough during this period over the Sea of Oman,” according to PACA.
The ROP has closed roads in Liwa-Shinas due to the overflowing of Bani Khuzaiymah wadi. ROP has called on citizens and residents to be vigilant from thundershowers which are likely to continue in Northern governorates.
