Contractor in Oman handed fine by Consumer Protection

Muscat: A contractor has been fined OMR 500 for failing to provide previously agreed upon services, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection announced.

The preliminary court in Sohar convicted a defendant of failing to provide a proper service in his dealings with a consumer and punished him with a fine of OMR 500.

The consumer submitted a complaint to the Directorate General of Consumer Protection in Sohar stating that he agreed with the contractor to build four shops at a value of OMR 15,700.

The two agreed that the completion period was to be seven months. However, after the agreed period passed, the work was not completed.

The consumer submitted a copy of the contract and a letter from a project consultant stating that the work was not completed because the contractor stopped working. He also submitted a reconciliation record with the contractor, according to which another date was agreed upon for completion of the work, which the contractor did not comply with.

The incident was referred to the Public Prosecution, the suspect was accused of failing to provide the service to the consumer in a proper manner and in accordance with consumer protection law, and thus he was handed a fine of OMR 500.
