Health Ministry releases statistics for Oman

Muscat: Hospitals and health centres affiliated to the Ministry of Health in the Sultanate witnessed 121,812 surgeries in 2018. These operations included 52,274 major operations and 69,538 minor operations.

A statement issued online by The Ministry of Health said, “8,406 operations at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, including 4,754 major operations and 3,652 minor operations, while the number of operations conducted in the Royal Oman Police Hospital is 1,531, including 481 major operations and 1,050 minor operations, according to the bulletin of health statistics issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information.”

“Sohar Hospital accounted for 10.8 per cent of the operations in the hospitals of the Ministry of Health with a total of 13,155 operations conducted during 2018, the number of major operation are 6,303 while the number of minor operations in the hospital were 6,852, followed by Al-Rustaq Hospital with 10.1% of the total number of 12,305 operations, including 3,840 major operations and 8,465 minor operations, Khawlah Hospital accounted for 8.6% of the operations in the hospitals of the Ministry of Health with a total of 10,500 operations conducted during 2018, the number of major operations are 8,006 while the number of minor operations are 2,494.”

“The Royal Hospital accounted for 8.3 per cent of the total operations in the hospitals of the Ministry of Health with 10,103 operations, including 5,943 major operations and 4,160 minor operations.”

“ While Al Nahda Hospital accounted for 6.5 per cent with a total of 7,951 operations including 6084 major operations and 1,867 minor operations.”

“The number of minor operations conducted in health centers reached 12,962, constituting 18.6 per cent of the minor operations carried out at the level of the Sultanate.”

“Statistics showed that the outpatient clinics in the institutions of the Ministry of Health recorded about 15,513,138 visits of patients, including 14,764,347 Omani patients with an average of 5.7 patient visits per person per year, and 748,791 visits to repatriate patients with an average of 0.4 visits per person during the year 2018,” the Health Ministry added

“The bulletin also showed that the outpatient clinics in the private sector institutions recorded about 3,840,685 visit of patients, including 1,922,924 Omani patients with an average of 0.7 visits per person per year, and 1,917,761 visits for expatriate patients with an average of 0.9 visits per person during 2018.”

In addition the Ministry said: “The bulletin also indicates that the number of hospitals in the Sultanate reached 81, including 50 hospitals belonging to the Ministry of Health which have 5,027 beds, while the number of health complexes affiliated to the Ministry of Health reached 22 complexes and 185 health centers including 130 without beds and 55 centers with 95 beds.”

“The bulletin states that the number of employees in the establishments affiliated to the Ministry of Health reached 39,303 where the number of doctors reached 6,533, including 2,412 specialists and consultants, while the number of dentists reached 315, while the number of pharmacists affiliated to the Ministry of Health was about 571.”

The Ministry also confirmed, “The number of nurses, male and female, are 14,433 and the number of technicians are 340 technicians, and the photographers and radiology technicians 772 and medical laboratory technicians are 1,064 and assistant pharmacists are 1406, while the number of other cadres are 13,269.”

“The number of labors at the medical section which belong to other governmental establishments and hospitals are 4,527 in the Royal Oman Police, Petroleum Development Oman, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and Diwan of the Royal Court.” the Ministry added.

In addition: “As for the health institutions of the private sector, the bulletin shows that the number of hospitals belonging to the health sector reached 25 hospitals which included 908 beds, while the number of medical centers and private complexes reached 298 centers and complexes.”

The Ministry cleared that: “ The number of public clinics reached 265 clinics. There are 54 Indian and Chinese clinics, while the the public clinics affiliated to private companies are 176 private clinics and 122 private clinics and 306 dental clinics.”

“The Sultanate has 29 private medical laboratories, 8 private diagnostic centers and 745 private pharmacies.”

“In addition, the bulletin shows that the number of employees in these private health institutions reached 13,546 where the number of doctors reached about 2,520 doctor, including 1,306 specialists and consultants."
