Oman beat Hong Kong to claim T20 World Cup spot

Muscat: Oman made history on Wednesday night when they booked their place in the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup after beating Hong Kong by 12 runs in Dubai.

In the second play-off, Oman sealed their place in the showpiece event scheduled to take place in Australia next year, after a disastrous start against Hong Kong. Batting first, at one stage, Oman was 46/6 before star opening batsman Jatinder Singh (67 from 50 balls) along with Aamir Kaleem (42 runs from 17) helped the team post a competitive score of 134.

Bilal Khan was the hero, as he took four crucial wickets and helped Oman restrict Hong Kong to 122/9. This is Oman’s second outing at the prestigious tournament. Apart from Oman, Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Netherlands, Namibia and Scotland are the six teams who have qualified for the event from the World T20 qualifiers.

These six teams will join giant Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the preliminary stages of the World Cup. Four teams among the eight will then progress to the Super 12 stage.
