NewYork: On this day in 1940 was born John Lennon, who would become one of the biggest names in rock and roll history and establish himself as a cultural icon for generations to come.

Lennon, who would go on to become one of the founding members of the Beatles, a band that forever changed the way we think about music, was born on 10 October, 1940, and on the 79th anniversary of his birth, the United Nations Economic, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), has paid tribute to the man.

In the tribute, UNESCO quote Lennon’s lyrics from one of his most iconic songs: “Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can. No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man. Imagine all the people, sharing all the world... imagine all the people, living life in peace..."

“We must wait no more,” added UNESCO. “Let's imagine peace. Let's work for peace. Let's achieve peace.”

The organisation went on to say, “Today we pay tribute to a dreamer, a dreamer whose dreams we are working to make come true. Let's imagine. Let's dream. Let's build peace... today and every day. This our homage to John Lennon, born on this day in 1940. His dream of peace is still alive and we will make it come true. Will you help us?”
