Oman has a rich and deep maritime history, so it is no surprise Omanis feel at home on the waves. With the country opening itself up for tourism, the Sultanate’s own are now taking this opportunity to share their expertise with tourists.
It is only natural that Omanis are eager to take part in water sports. With a long coastline and an ocean that is teeming with marine life, the Sultanate’s waters are a great place for tourists to go snorkelling, diving, and boating, among other activities offered in the country.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, “Oman looks back on a proud maritime history, renowned for Dhow building and trading across the seas. As such, Omanis are known to have a special connection with the sea, settling where there are natural harbours and great fishing grounds.
“It comes as no surprise that the Sultanate, with over 3,000km of coastline and rich marine life, has become one of the world’s fastest-growing diving spots,” added the Ministry. “Areas such as Al Khayran, Al Fahil Island, Daymaniyat Islands and Al Makbara Bay are incredibly popular with the discerning diver.

Several tour operators specialise in water sports, such as snorkelling, sailing, jet skiing, and kayaking. For those visitors seeking their own water adventures, yachts and boats are also available for hire.”
Among Oman’s prime diving and snorkelling spots are those located in its northern Governorate of Musandam, which is separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates but is still accessible through road, ferry and aircrafts.

“The exclave of Musandam is Oman’s northernmost governorate, separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE and home to some of the Sultanate’s most dramatic landscape. Here, 2000m high mountains meet the sea with stunning fjords and crystal-clear waters making this area one of the best diving and snorkelling spots in the world,” the Ministry said in this context.
