Shop in Oman caught offering fake discounts

Muscat: Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACA) took a commercial establishment to task after it violated Consumer Protection Law by announcing fake prices for commodities.

According to PACA, the shop had announced significant reductions in the prices of household goods but after verification it turned out that the offered price is the original value of the commodity.

The authority said in a statement online: "Investigations teams from the Department of Commercial Fraud showed that the institution was raising the prices of some goods doubled and then announced of a great discounts to delude consumers."

"The team has found that the price of the goods at the discount is equal to the normal price and similar to the price of the same goods in all other shops."

PACA added: "The Corporation has been referred to the judicial authorities for violating Article 20 of the Consumer Protection Law, which stipulates that the advertiser and the provider must abide by transparency and credibility and stay away from false advertising or misleading publicity when promoting the product or service it provides to the consumer."
