Weather update: Tropical depression leads to strong winds over Arabian Sea

Muscat: A low air pressure zone in the Arabian Sea has developed into a tropical depression, leading to strong surface winds being formed over the body of water off the coast of Oman, the Public Authority of Civil Aviation (PACA) has announced on Sunday.

According to PACA, surface winds around the centre of the depression are between 17 and 27 knots.

In a statement online, PACA said: "The low-pressure zone east of the Arabian Sea has evolved into a tropical depression. Surface winds around the centre are estimated to be 17 to 27 knots, and it is likely to deepen into a deep tropical depression in the next 24 hours.

"Latest numerical weather prediction indicates westerly to Northwesterly movement of the tropical depression towards the centre of the Arabian Sea with a probability of further intensification into a deep depression within the coming 24 hours," the statement added.

"The depression is about 150 km away from the Indian coast of Gujarat and around 900 km away from the closest Omani coast (Masirah)," the statement read. "The centre continues to monitor all updates of this tropical weather event and the Public Authority for Civil Aviation advises the public to follow weather bulletins for updates.
