MOH denies rumours that meat consumption aids in contracting colon cancer

Muscat: Oman’s Ministry of Health has denied rumours being spread on social media that eating meat is the main cause of Colon Cancer.

In an online statement, the ministry said: “The National Oncology Centre of the Royal Hospital would like to deny what has been circulated widely in the social media that the main cause of colon cancer, in the Governorates of Dhofar and Al Sharqiyah, is eating meat.”

“It should be noted that eating moderate intakes of red meat one to two times a week with vegetable, brown bread or rice is beneficial for human health,” the ministry added.

They clarified that multiple factors contribute to a patient being diagnosed with colon cancer including: genetic factors, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol consumption and unhealthy food.

The Ministry also said that it must be pointed out that any information related to cancerous tumours must be taken from the Ministry of Health, represented by the Cancer Research and Investigation Committee.
