Lecture by Physics Nobel laureate in Oman next week

Muscat: Nobel laureate in Physics, Professor Dr Hiroshi Amano is scheduled to give a special GUtech public lecture titled ‘lighting the world with LEDs” and the “internet of energy”.

The lecture will be held on Wednesday, 11 September at 7.00 pm at Kempinski Hotel Muscat at Al Mouj.

The talk is open to the general public and has been organised by the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) in cooperation with Kempinski Hotel Muscat.

The talk will be part of GUtech’s Professional Development Days (PDD).

“We are very honoured to welcome Prof Dr Hiroshi Amano as a distinguished speaker. Prof Amano is not only an outstanding scientist, he is a great teacher and communicator, being able to make the audience curious and let them understand the subject of his scientific research,” Professor Dr Michael Modigell, Rector at GUtech, said.

Dr Amano was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics with his colleagues Dr Isamu Akasaki and Dr Shuji Nakamura in 2014.

They won for their invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources, LED lights.

Dr Amano also initiated a network of scientists that work on the “Internet of Energy” a few years ago.

The so-called “Future Wireless Power Transmission Network” is an open innovation platform that develops sustainable, smart solutions for future energy challenges of our societies.

According to Dr Amano, by using LED lights, Japan reduced its annual electricity consumption by 7 per cent. Energy efficient LED lights contributed to the reduction of CO2 emissions and global warming.

General Manager of Kempinski Hotel Muscat, Carsten Wiegandt, said, “Sustainability lies at the centre of our concept, and Dr Amano’s lecture provides a great insight on the importance of conserving energy through innovative efficiency. We are honoured to welcome him to our hotel in partnership with GUtech.”

Dr Amano is a Doctor of Engineering and he is the Director of the Center for Integrated Research of Future Electronics at the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability and he is the Director of the Akasaki Research Center at Nagoya University (Japan).
