No new vehicle number plates in Oman: ROP

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police has responded to rumours about a new type of vehicle registration number plate that is purportedly thinner and has fewer digits than traditional plates.

According to the ROP, the use of these plates is prohibited within Oman since they are given to people traveling to non-Arab countries.

Users on social media had shared the images of two of these plates, saying that they were a new type coming soon to Oman.

A statement by ROP Traffic read: "In relation to what has been in circulation on social media about a new type of vehicle registration plate being issued, the Directorate General of Traffic would like to explain that these are a type of temporary plate that have been issued by the ROP for years.

Although these plates have been in issue, they are not for use in Oman at all, but are used to identify Omani vehicles outside of Oman.

"The plates are issued to car owners upon request if they want to take their vehicles into non-Arab countries, and their use is prohibited inside Oman."
